Fall Back in with Midland PTPI

It is once again time for fall. The leaves are changing and the weather is getting colder. It is also time to start our programs for People to People. Hope everyone who attended the 49th anniversary party at Villa D Alessandro had a good time. It was a bit noisie but the food and company was great. We had 17 attendees.

Our next meeting will be Monday, October 1, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. The location is back at NADA on the campus of Northwood University. The price is $13 for members and $14 for nonmembers. Ms. Stephanie Maurissen will be our speaker. Her speech is entitled “Humanitarian Aid as a Career”. It should be very interesting. Reservations are required. They need to be in by Friday, September 28, 2012. Please call Fran Mann at 832-2257 or Erika Smith at 835-8055. The format will be the same – buffet style with salad, vegetable, two meats, pasta dish and dessert. Hope to see you there!!!

Jim Mentele, is once again willing be furnishing us with membership booklets. If you have an address, email, or phone number that has changed please let him now ASAP. (He is going out of town and would like to have them completed). Thank you for your attention to this matter.  Paid members who will be attending the October meeting will be receiving their membership booklets then. Paid members that are unable to attend will be receiving theirs in the mail.

Dr. Ghislaine Maurissen has volunteered to be our Vice President. Congratulation Ghislaine!!!

The club received thank you notes from the organizations that we distributed funds to. Those organizations were: Midland Cultural Awareness ($50); Non-Violent Peace Force ($100); Delta Global Peace Studies ($50); Chinese Cultural Ongoing Program ($100); Peanut Butter Project ($100); Global Compassion ($100); Help Hearts Helping Hands ($50); Midland Sister City Program ($100); Open Door ($100) and Food Pantry ($50). The total amount given was $800.

Please put the following dates on your calendars. Monday, November 5, 2012 – India (program) and Monday, December 3, 2012 – Christmas Party (social).

Because of our snowbirds and the unpredictable weather, the club will not be meeting during January, February, or March. Hope everyone has a wonderful winter and a great start to 2013!

I received an announcement from the Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) of a program that they are sponsoring. I believe it was also mentioned in the Midland Daily News. They have asked me to forward the following information to those of you who might be interested. The group is hosting the “Civilian Peacekeeper of the Year” Ms. Tiffany Easthom who witnessed violence perpetrated on children and women in South Sudan. She is the country director of NP. Hear her story on Saturday, October 6th at Creative 360. Informal gathering at 7 p.m. with the program to follow at 7:30 p.m. There is no charge however, donations are accepted. For more information contact Mary Mersereau-Kempf at 636-7780 or Marymmk@gmail.com.

In July, PTPI announced the 12th and 13th books. The books are Bringing up Bebe by Pamela Druckerman and Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua. The books give two very different views of childrearing.

Bringing up Bebe tells the story of one American’s journey moving to France and entering motherhood at the same time the author aims to find the secrets to French parenting, all the while accepting very different advice from friends back in America.

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is not an examination of Chinese parenting as much as it is a look into the authors demanding parenting style and the very specific choices she makes for her children.

Book 14 will be announced on October 1st!!!

See you October 1st.

Deb Teot, President
Midland Chapter of PTPI
